This first sessions was the initial brainstorming phase for the project. We discussed various aspects of Carlisle based around the topics we were given as well as ideas and concepts for how we would showcase Carlisle in the form of artworks.
Nightlife
- Seems bright and energetic, busy and exciting

Notes and ideas about our discussions of how we would format our work:
- Work being coherent or separate
- As long as they all follow the same question/ colour scheme
- Merging themes together, one piece that produces all themes
- Finding a theme that branches or links to the other themes, umbrella term
- Everything has a history so all themes can link to it, depending how far back you go in history, are there other stories that haven’t been known or had light shone on them enough, significance of hidden things in history
- Looking at things that are less obvious, smaller businesses and people rather than the big picture

After returning from the break, we started discussing how we would obtain information about the people of Carlisle.
Ideas on ways of gaining information for the project:
- Speaking to people
- Going to places and observing places
- Even if nothings happening we can be creative and show it in a different way
- History
- Tullie House
- History of the city as a wide subject
- Looking at individual people or small businesses
- Musicians/ venues: market hall, old fire station, brickhouse
- Seasons
- Types/groups of people e.g. tourists, students
- Weather and the effects on the city
After this discussion, we decided to go off on our own to do research about Carlisle and the people there to gain a better understanding as well as to have a more informed discussion next session.
End - 12:10am
Meeting Two - 10:10am (08/03/23)
Our second meeting was about sharing our findings whilst still heavily in the brainstorming phase.
Eve - Research on Communities
Callum- Research on Nature
George- Research on Architecture
Hannah- Research on History
General ideas on how to format the artworks:
After discussing our findings, Inspired by Eve's research, we got into a discussion around the disenfranchised youth of Cumbria, the hardships they face and how we could shed light on these issues to create meaningful artwork.
Notes from our discussion:
After our discussion, we decided to be more freeform with who wants to research what as well as narrowing down our topic to be the youth of Carlisle. We when our separate ways like last week to build on what we has discussed in that seminar.
End - 11:20
Our second meeting was about sharing our findings whilst still heavily in the brainstorming phase.
Eve - Research on Communities
- Carlisle has the least diversity of culture in the UK per square mile, 0.09%
- 97% white British
- Most people in Carlisle history were either Scottish or Irish immigrants
- Can’t ignore the fact that’s negative- its the truth
- Health care and NHS is the biggest career in Carlisle
- Looking at striking and people working
- Street-performers and recurring people, everyone knows each other, tight community
- Culture of shops and businesses in Carlisle e.g. betting shops, off licence, corner shops
- Subcultures e.g. chavs, students, football club (creating our own cultures and looking in depth)
Callum- Research on Nature
- Focusing on human nature and finding similar communities and cultures
- Observing people like observing animals, looking at certain people and studying humans
- Invasive species and being taken over
George- Research on Architecture
- General colour scheme of the city itself
- Look at the smaller structures, what do people not see
- Difference between modern architecture and old post war buildings
- Citadel becoming a place for shops and soon a university
Hannah- Research on History
- Timeline of Roman times to 2005
- The name of Carlisle came from Wales
- Carlisle is a strategically placed area for war bases and transport for Scotland and Ireland
- Started as a small town but the population grew more
- 2022 population is 108k people
- 1349 didn’t recover until the 16th century, a couple of years later
- Comparison of the two pandemics and how it affected Carlisle
- Building of railways and transporting people and goods from other areas, gaining tourists
General ideas on how to format the artworks:
- Doesn’t have to be pro Carlisle
- Could be intentionally bad, comedic side and doing what people don’t expect
After discussing our findings, Inspired by Eve's research, we got into a discussion around the disenfranchised youth of Cumbria, the hardships they face and how we could shed light on these issues to create meaningful artwork.
Notes from our discussion:
- Youth of carlisle and why people are becoming chavs/roadmen
- Not a lot to do for the youth, not many activities, feels like a city for the older generations
- Meanings behind things and what is causing it, lack of family and community support
- Looking at suicide and mental health, most common around 18-24 year olds
- Looking into low income families and where people are form, focusing on economy and class systems
- Linking to communities, society and family life
- Taking the perspectives of chavs, outside looking in or getting involved in their lives
- How does chav culture impact the general culture of Carlisle
- Humanising people and looking at how they behave
- Understanding what they think e.g. are they wanting to do something better, are they stuck where they are, is it peer pressure keeping them there
- Access to drugs, alcohol and smoking/vaping
After our discussion, we decided to be more freeform with who wants to research what as well as narrowing down our topic to be the youth of Carlisle. We when our separate ways like last week to build on what we has discussed in that seminar.
End - 11:20
Meeting Three - 11:35am (15/03/23)
The third meeting was mainly narrowing down our concept of making artworks around the youth of Cumbria in the form of chavs as well as about brainstorming what we wanted the six artworks to be about. Whilst discussing, we floated around the idea of doing a music video as one of the artworks as chav culture and history has a lot of ties to music.
Notes about our initial discussion on what the artworks should be as well as expanding on what we think a chav is.
We ended up scrapping the idea of a music video trailer in favour for a fashion show shoot as our group was heavy on photographers. We also decided on the idea of using the money to commission a model for the shoots. We continued the discussion and moved onto how we would find chavs to use in the photoshoots as well as website functionality. we also talked about how the other specialties of our group could be used, for example, Our graphic designer using photos from the photoshoot to create a poster.
Notes from that discussion:

- Music Video
- Photoshoot
- Fashion and identity
- How you notice a chav
- How they’re perceived
- Brands associated to chavs

Notes from that discussion:
- Looking about location and where we find chavs
- Having a map with different areas
- On the website, click onto specific areas for artworks
- Don’t have to find actual chavs, we could make them because its based on appearance
- Over exaggerated
- Heavy on photographers so its based on photography, different collections for different artworks
- Fashion itself being an artwork rather than the photography based work
- Podcasts or radio station
- Interviews with chavs
- Documentary style
- Using the audio as part of a trailer/video
- Slideshow of photos with the interview in the background
- Makeup tutorial for chavs
- Collections of vapes to create a structure
- Bin bag for vapes to collect them
End - 11:55
Meeting Four – 10:35am (22/03/23)
The fourth meeting was mainly discussing how we can communicate with the youth in a more effective way and learn more about them. Moving away from the chav concept and talking about Carlisle's youth as a whole as we struggled to get a solid idea for what we wanted with the previous plan. Still in the brainstorming phase.
Notes:
End – 11:35
After the discussion was over. We decided to contact youth groups for involvement in our project but were unsuccessful in getting them involved. Eventually, over the term break. One of our team members, Eve, was contacted by Multicultural Cumbria. The charity was holding an event at the Carlisle college and needed assistance with the more creative aspects of the event. We agreed to take part. A meeting was arranged with the leader of the event, Saj, where we discussed what our specific roles would be at the event.
Below are messages in our group chat with Eve telling us about being approached as well as us organising the meeting.

Notes:
- Considering feedback and acting on it to reduce work and finalise ideas
- Talking to youth groups/zones and learning more about the youth
- Speaking to the Carlisle youth zone, finding reasons why they don’t support age groups
- They have social media but they're not updating their website
- Interviews: Where does the funding come from/ is it other businesses or council what activities do you do, how many people use the facility
- Working with youth zone and trying to get the youth involved e.g. mural to get people creative
- Getting cameras into the area to document it/ create a short film
- Creating artworks on social medias to get people involved

Meeting Five - 10:05am (19/04/22)
After the meeting with Saj. we began to plan out what we were going to do at the event as well as how this would be implemented into the project.
Discussion notes:
We also began to formulate a more concrete set of ideas for what our final artworks would be. The talk with Saj helped a lot with this as she wanted the illustrators to create banners and help the kids at the event create there own as well in the form of a workshop. She also wanted the photographers to take photos of the event that the organisers could use later on as promotion.
Artwork concept notes:
Notes on how we will relate this to the project as well as event planning:
End - 10:50
Meeting Six - 10:10am (26/04/23)

After the meeting with Saj. we began to plan out what we were going to do at the event as well as how this would be implemented into the project.
Discussion notes:
- Having access to multicultural group media to create posts – part of artwork?
- Illustration and graphics making banners, with the children for the event
- Photography documenting the event, consent forms are created in advance
- Film and TV making a short video, recording the process of the performance/action
- Permission slips might be needed for a workshop with children so you can use their work
- Assessed on the actions rather than the quality of artwork
We also began to formulate a more concrete set of ideas for what our final artworks would be. - Plan the interaction and the workshop with the kids, how can we get them involved
- Making examples for the kids, getting the materials which they will be using
- Make start on the website
- What colour and typeface suits the theme
- Leave youth zone, focus on the weekend
- Leave the sixth artwork to be a reflective piece
- Inspiration will come from the event
- Website will be full of photos for the event, documenting from start to finish
- Components of the website, one side is the artwork, other side is the process
- Combining different medias and overlap techniques
- Sounds and audio from film alongside photography
- No money has been spent
- Use it on materials rather than being stuck with theirs? Will there be enough materials, could we get better materials
- Photos need to be uploaded as they’re taken for promotional purposes, photos can be edited afterwards for our artworks
